Several groups have chosen to affiliate with the Eastern Communication Association. Affiliate groups are permitted slots for a business meeting and a limited number of panels at each year's conference. Otherwise their affairs are handled internally, that is, separate from the affairs of ECA. The American Society for the History of Rhetoric was organized, in 1977, as the American Branch of the International Society for the History of Rhetoric. Its purpose is to foster the study of rhetoric in all historical periods in American as well as other cultures.
Founded in 1938 by Alfred Korzybski, the Institute of General Semantics (IGS) promotes a scientific approach to understanding human behavior, especially that related to symbol systems and language, and the application of proven principles that guide advancements in critical thinking, rational behavior, and general sanity.
