116th Eastern Communication Association Convention
“Contemporary Problems, Creative Solutions”
Hyatt Regency, Buffalo, NY
March 26-March 30, 2025
Submission Deadline: October 16, 2024, 11:59pm PST
The Eastern Communication Association will hold their 116th Annual Convention in Buffalo, New York from Wednesday, March 26 through Sunday, March 30, 2025. The convention theme for 2025 is “Contemporary Problems, Creative Solutions.” The deadline for submissions is October 16, 2024 11:59 P.M. (PST).
As an Affiliate Organization to ECA, the Media Ecology Association seeks individual paper, panel, and roundtable submissions to the Annual Convention that focus on the study of media as environments and attend the study of media as media. While encourage any and all submissions related to media ecology, we especially welcome submissions tied to the convention theme, “Contemporary Problems, Creative Solutions.”
In describing the convention theme, ECA states, “In our ever-changing world, contemporary problems and issues need to be addressed with creative solutions. Communication Studies scholars and practitioners are well-positioned to offer theoretical and practical insights to address contemporary problems.” Those of us who work within the tradition of media ecology wholeheartedly agree that we gain a deeper our understanding of problems through the study of communication, especially through the study of media as environments. Pointing to the problems created by communication technologies, Harold A. Innis in The Bias of Communication writes, “Enormous improvements in communication have made understanding more difficult.” By attending to media and communication technologies that improve the speed and efficiency of communication, media ecology is particularly well-suited in enriching our ability to explore the problems and difficulties in our contemporary moment.
Some guiding questions for papers, panels, and roundtables may include, but are not limited to: How can the study of media as environments improve our understanding of contemporary problems? How can the study of media as environments lead us to creative solutions to contemporary problems? How might we seek balance as a creative solution? What are the problems that media ecology might help us to identify that other traditions of communication and media studies might miss? What problems arise from—and what solutions are possible in—our shifting media environments?
