The Argumentation & Forensics Interest Group of the Eastern Communication Association (ECA) invites you to submit individual completed papers, as well as panel, debate, and roundtable discussion proposals, for the 115th Annual ECA Convention to be held March 20-24 in Cambridge, MA. The submission deadline is September 18, 2023.

The Argumentation & Forensics Interest Group welcomes submissions covering all topics relevant to research, practice, and pedagogy associated with argumentation, debate, and forensics. The interest group encourages a broad view of topics relevant to the study and process of arguments as they intersect with communication and rhetoric, and all methodologies, philosophies, modalities, and theoretical perspectives are welcome. In addition to subjects relevant to teaching and coaching in competitive debate and forensics, we also welcome submissions which address the role of argumentation in the public sphere, including but not limited to activism, protest, political campaigns, and political debates. We especially encourage submissions that are relevant to the theme of the 2024 convention: Currents.

All submissions should be made through Attendee Interactive (available at www.ecasite.org). Submission guidelines are as follows:

  1. Individual submissions of complete papers should include the following elements:
  2. The word “Debut” marked on all papers written by authors who have not presented previously at a regional or national convention.
  3. An abstract on the second page.
  4. A statement of professional responsibility.

** If the paper has multiple authors, please indicate who will be presenting at the convention.

Submission of program/panel proposals should include the following elements:

  1. A thematic title for the program.
  2. Names of the chair and respondents (if any). Chairs should not also be designated as respondents.
  3. Names, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, and institutional affiliations of all participants.
  4. Titles and abstracts for each paper or presentation.
  5. A program copy (no more than a 75-word description) as it should appear in the final program.
  6. A detailed rationale for the program/panel.
  7. A statement of professional responsibility.

Submission of Roundtable proposals should include the following elements:

  1. Roundtable Title
  2. Name of the chair
  3. Participants: Names, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, and institutional affiliations of all participants.
  4. Description: A program copy (no more than a 75-word description) as it should appear in the final program.
  5. Rationale for Roundtable (10,000 Character max)
  6. Target Audience (10,000 Character max)
  7. Requests for Audio-Visual Equipment: Internet Access, Laptop Audio, LCD Projector
  8. Special Requests
  9. Supporting Document(s): Purpose of the roundtable (program copy), agenda for roundtable, and invitation for audience participation.
  10. A statement of professional responsibility.

Submission of Debate should include the following elements:

  1. Debate Title and format
  2. Name of the debate moderator
  3. Debaters: Names, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, and institutional affiliations of all participants.
  4. Debate topic and description: A program copy (no more than a 75-word description) as it should appear in the final program.
  5. Rationale (10,000 Character max)
  6. Target Audience (10,000 Character max)
  7. Requests for Audio-Visual Equipment: Internet Access, Laptop Audio, LCD Projector
  8. Special Requests
  9. A statement of professional responsibility.

The following Statement of Professional Responsibility MUST be included with every submission in order for it to be eligible for review:

In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/We recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/We agree to present this panel or paper if it is accepted and programmed. I/We further recognize that all who attend and present at ECA’s annual meeting must register and pay required fees.
