A Call for Papers from the American Society for the History of Rhetoric for the 116th Annual ECA Convention, March 26-30, 2025, Buffalo NY

The American Society for the History of Rhetoric invites completed papers and panel or roundtable proposals from scholars who take a historical approach to the study of rhetoric. We welcome submissions on all historical aspects of rhetoric, in all historical periods, and with reference to all intellectual, national, and cultural communities. Our scope includes, but is not limited to, historical approaches to rhetorical theory, discourse, criticism, pedagogy, and media studies. We especially welcome proposals that address the convention theme: "Contemporary Problems, Creative Solutions."  Follow the directions below to submit COMPLETE PAPERS or PANEL AND ROUNDTABLE PROPOSALS.

COMPLETE PAPERS

Individual submissions of complete competitive papers should include two separate attachments:

1) A title page with the names, email addresses, institutional affiliations of all authors and the title of the paper.

2) A manuscript that includes:

(a) a 200-450 word abstract and the title of the paper on the first page, and

(b) a maximum of 25 pages (double-spaced, 11- or 12-point font) of text, excluding references and tables.

There should be no information in the paper that identifies the author(s) (beyond that which appears on the separate title page). Please remove any identifiers, such as the author’s name, from the paper and electronic file from the header or on the file label. Generally, follow MLA format guidelines. Repeat a shortened version of the title in the header of every page. Number your pages.

  • If appropriate, indicate “STUDENT” in Attendee Interactive. All authors must be students to be considered a student paper.
  • Audio-visual requests should be submitted in Attendee Interactive. It is advisable to have a back-up plan in the event that equipment is unavailable or of technical difficulties.

PANEL AND ROUNDTABLE PROPOSALS

  • Panel, roundtable, and innovative presentation proposals should focus on some unifying theme or concept relevant to research, theory, or instruction related to the history of rhetoric.
  • Programs may consist of a chair, individual presenters, and a respondent; we will also consider proposals for programs in alternative formats. Innovation is welcome!
  • Programs co-sponsored with other interest groups are also welcome.

The panel organizer is expected to take responsibility for communication with the Planner:

David.Hoffman@baruch.cuny.edu

Panel proposals should include the following:

* The title of the panel/roundtable.

* A one-page rationale for the panel/roundtable and explanation of how the papers are thematically linked.

* Names of the chair and respondents (if any).

* Names, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, and institutional affiliations of all participants.

* Title and brief (1-2 paragraph/s) description of each presentation.

* Program copy (no more than a 75-word description) as it should appear in the final program.

* Equipment needed for the program. We cannot guarantee the availability of equipment.

ALL SUBMISSIONS! Include a Statement of Professional Responsibility! When submitting a paper or proposal acknowledge the following statement in Attendee Interactive:

“In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/We recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. If this submission is accepted and programmed, I/We agree to register for the 2025 ECA Convention, pay fees, and present in Providence. I/We understand that presenters with last minute emergencies must make arrangements as possible for an alternate presenter as well as communicate their absences to both the Interest Group Planner and ECA VP; no shows will be removed from the official program.”
