ECA 2021 Convention - Instructional Communication Interest Group Call for Submissions

Call for Submissions

Instructional Communication Interest Group

Eastern Communication Association Annual Convention

ECA 2021 – Cambridge, MA – March 24-28

The Instructional Communication Interest Group of the Eastern Communication Association is now accepting submissions for the 2021 conference in Cambridge, MA. The 2021 convention theme is “Resilience.” Toward that end, First Vice President Dr. Amanda G. McKendree invites ECA interest groups and members to develop programming for 2021 that engages “Resilience” thoughtfully as a persistent response to overcoming obstacles, thriving despite challenges, and adapting to an ever-changing global landscape. How have we met these challenges in instruction personally, professionally, and as a discipline?

In what ways does our scholarship and teaching respond to the challenges facing our learning communities locally and globally? How are we studying the powerful impact of public, private, and mediated messages on our relationships, organizations, communities, and the environment?

What challenges must be met specifically by communication scholars, practitioners, and teachers, and how are we responding with theories, questions, methods, data analysis techniques, and practices?

What opportunities exist for us to meet this moment in history with our research, service, pedagogy, and practice? What are you doing that is unique? How are you engaging with conflict and struggle through scholarship and teaching?  What efforts must be made to ensure that our work and our field are addressing the practical communication concerns of society that exist today and that might arise tomorrow?

Our “Resilience” 2021 conference recognizes that as we are embedded in a historical moment marked by “wicked problems,” we look forward to the opportunity to explore resilience for global communities and share possibilities for teaching, research, civic engagement, as well as in our professional and personal endeavors.  We recognize that inherent within resilience are conflict and struggle. However, from this discomfort, resilience brings a power and a responsibility to share with the larger global community.

Topic areas appropriate for the Instructional Communication Interest Group include, but are not limited to:

- Effective teaching (i.e. the relationship between instructor behaviors and student outcomes)

- Student involvement (e.g., synchronous/asynchronous participation, motives for communicating, out-of-class communication)

- Meeting challenges of asynchronous teaching

- Hybrid models of instruction

- Assessment studies

- Scale development and testing studies

- Meta analyses

- Comprehensive literature reviews

- Teaching activities

- Theory/model testing and development

- Instructor outcomes (e.g., job satisfaction, burn-out)

- Mentoring relationships

The Instructional Communication Interest Group welcomes submissions from quantitative, qualitative, critical, and rhetorical scholars.

Below are guidelines for competitive paper and panel submissions.

The deadline for submissions is October 15, 2020 at 11:59 PM. ECA will be using Attendee Interactive to manage submissions and reviews.
