ECA’s Media Ecology Association Affiliate invites submissions for the 110th Annual ECA Convention

Providence, RI was founded in 1636 by renegade preacher Roger Williams to escape religious persecution in Massachusetts. Providence was so named to express William’s appreciation of God’s protection. A more secular translation of Providence is “the foresight or care exercised by a person in the management of affairs or resources.” Providence is now proud to call itself “The Creative Capital.” To honor the founding principles of Providence and the creative identity of Providence, it is appropriate our conference theme be “Creating Our Future.” The 110th Annual ECA Conference will be built around the idea of “Creating Our Future” through the management of resources emanating from our research and scholarly activities to transforms lives, communities, and organizations.
In the 1970s, Providence began a creative process in which it removed bridges covering the Moshassuck and Woonasquatucket Rivers, which converge to become the Providence River and the head of Narragansett Bay. Uncovering these rivers led to the creation of a new Providence where the rivers were lined with cobblestone walkways, park benches, trees and flowering plants and a series of Venetian bridges connecting downtown Providence to the city’s East Side. The City’s revitalization process resulted in its centerpiece, the Water Place Park that includes an amphitheater and WaterFire experience. Providence is also proud of the influence of the many academic institutions on the city’s intellectual life, the city’s “cool” vibe and its much-lauded restaurant scene.
My vision for our conference is to follow our host city’s lead by striving to be “The Creative Capital of the Communication Discipline.” We will build a future in which we use our resources to influence our immediate environments to create better education, to create an understanding of relationships and how to make relationships successful, to create organizational communication that is efficient and profit or service driven, and to create health care communication to increase patient quality of life and provider job satisfaction. My vision is to take our rightful place among fields that have earned the type of credibility we are striving to develop in external audiences, while maintaining our traditions of excellent scholarship, teaching and service.
With “Creating Our Future” in mind, I invite members to engage in work that applies the results of our research and scholarly activities to solve problems or address challenges in communities, organizations, relationships and local environments. I invite our members to ask “what resources do I create and how can those resources create new possibilities for others?”
ECA will now be using Attendee Interactive to manage submissions and reviews. This is the same system used by the National Communication Association so you may be familiar with it. The deadline for submissions remains the same, October 15, 2018 at 11:59 PM. You will be prompted to create a new User ID and Password to submit your work. An email will be sent to the membership in the next couple of months to announce when Attendee Interactive will be open for submission. Additional information, including a link to the submission page, has been sent to ECA members.
WE INVITE competitive papers, thematic panels, roundtables, etc., relevant to the field of media ecology and particularly those that address the convention theme, CREATING OUR FUTURE—a call for the exploration of creative approaches to research and solutions, new approaches to teaching, and reaffirms innovative outreach and collaboration with communities for service and civic engagement opportunities.
• Individual submissions of complete competitive papers should include two separate attachments:
— Title page
— A manuscript that includes:
(a) a 250-500 word abstract of the paper (with title appearing on this page) and
(b) a maximum of 25-pages of text, excluding references and tables. No information in the paper that identifies the author(s) (beyond that which appears on the title page). Please remove any identifiers, such as the author’s name, from the paper and electronic file from the header or on the file label. Please follow APA format guidelines.
• Complete papers should not have been presented previously at another conference, (with the exception of a student-only conference), be accepted for publication, or have been published.
• Please indicate whether papers are debut papers when submitting To qualify as a debut paper, the author or co-authors must not have presented a paper at a state, regional, national or international convention. All authors of a co-authored paper must meet these eligibility requirements for a paper to be considered a Debut Paper.
• Indicate “STUDENT” in Attendee Interactive. All authors must be students to be considered a student paper.
• Audio-visual requests should be submitted in Attendee Interactive. Please note that equipment availability is extremely limited and the chances that we will get AV equipment almost nil.
PANEL AND ROUNDTABLE PROPOSALS
• Panel, roundtable, and innovative presentation proposals should focus on some unifying theme or concept relevant to research, theory, or instruction related to the field of media ecology.
• Programs may consist of a chair, individual presenters, and a respondent; however, roundtable discussions, performance venues, or other unique formats are encouraged.
• We request that any person serving as chair and/or respondent NOT be a participant in the panel or roundtable.
• Innovative program proposals, especially those that provide opportunities for engaged interaction among participants and attendees, are encouraged.
• Programs co-sponsored with other interest groups are also welcome.
• Programs that relate to the convention theme, “Building Bridges” are encouraged.
• The panel organizer is expected to take responsibility for communication with the Group Planner, alert her to any changes or problems and to ensure that panelists register for the conference and deliver their papers.
Panel proposals should include the following:
* Thematic title of the panel/roundtable.
* One-page rationale for the panel/roundtable and explanation of how the papers are thematically linked.
* Names of the chair and respondents (if any). Chairs should NOT also be designated as respondents.
* Names, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, and institutional affiliations of all participants.
* Title and brief (1-2 paragraph/s) description of each presentation.
* Program copy (no more than a 75-word description) as it should appear in the final program.
* Equipment needed for the program. Please note that equipment availability is limited if present at all.

Statement of Professional Responsibility
When submitting a paper or proposal acknowledge the following statement in Attendee Interactive.
“In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/We recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. If this submission is accepted and programmed, I/We agree to register for the 2019 ECA Convention, pay fees, and present in Providence. I/We understand that presenters with last minute emergencies must make arrangements as possible for an alternate presenter as well as communicate their absences to both the Interest Group Planner and ECA VP; no shows will be removed from the official program.”
