Neumann University invites applications Assistant Professor of Communication and Digital Media to begin in August 2018.
The Communication and Digital Media (CDM) major at Neumann is well-respected in the tri-state region for producing graduates who have a solid grasp of theory and hands-on practical experience. Our $5 million Mullen Communication Center offers students the most state-of-the-art television and radio facilities in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. CDM majors complete internships in the Philadelphia, New York, and New Jersey markets as part of their program of study and are well-placed after graduation in venues such as The Wendy Williams Show and The Preston and Steve Show. Neumann’s students have also received awards for their production work through NATAS.
We are hoping to hire a communication generalist who can contribute in substantive ways to our tracks in production and digital broadcasting, journalism and digital media, and strategic communication. The successful candidate will teach a range of courses in the major, from lower-level core courses to upper-division courses in the candidate’s areas of specialization. Background in video production/visual communication or in advertising will be considered a plus.
To qualify for rank as an assistant professor, the successful candidate must hold a terminal degree in communication studies, media, mass communication, digital media, public relations, strategic communication, production, or a related field. Candidates who are ABD with a confirmed defense date before August 2018 will be considered. Previous experience teaching at a college or university level is strongly preferred.
The standard teaching load at Neumann University is twelve credits per academic semester, with the opportunity to teach courses in the university’s Maymester, Winterim, and summer semester as student needs arise. Neumann expects full-time faculty to engage in scholarship and research on an ongoing basis, to serve on at least one division- or university-level committee per academic year, and to engage in community service, broadly defined. Beginning in the second year of employment, the new hire will also be expected to advise approximately 10-15 students within the major. Lastly, candidates should be aware that Neumann University does not offer tenure. Instead, the faculty work through a series of one-, three-, and five-year renewable contracts.
For full consideration, applications must include the following materials: a letter of interest that addresses the candidate’s experience teaching undergraduate courses as well as the candidate’s appreciation for, and congruence with, the Catholic Franciscan mission of the University; a curriculum vitae; copies of graduate transcripts (official copies will be required at the time of hire); and teaching evaluations, a sample syllabus, and other evidence of demonstrated excellence in undergraduate instruction. Letters of recommendation are not required at the initial stages of the review process, but will be solicited of all finalist candidates.
